The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care and Treatment (BADUPCT) works to close gaps and reduce overall morbidity and mortality related to alcohol and substance use among New Yorkers. BADUPCT develops, implements, and evaluates interventions and prevention strategies through contracting of treatment, recovery, and support services; policy analysis and development; epidemiology and surveillance; dissemination of treatment and management guidelines; harm reduction initiatives; public and provider outreach and education; and community involvement and interagency collaboration. The Bureau amplifies the voices of those most impacted and focuses on inequitable structural, social, service, and communication factors that drive disparities.
The Research and Surveillance unit conducts alcohol- and drug-related surveillance, program evaluation, and research, maintains databases, designs research protocols, produces reports, writes scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals, and facilitates program and policy development.
This position will be funded through OD2A, via a five-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control. This position is housed at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in Long Island City.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Research and Surveillance unit’s Research Associate, the Data Abstraction Specialist will assist with abstraction of data from medical examiner and toxicology reports and will enter this data in a database. These data will be used to conduct overdose mortality surveillance as well as to inform the development and evaluation of prevention efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Learn and implement proper data abstraction techniques to conduct data entry of information from medical examiner and toxicology reports.
- Review medical examiner reports and toxicology reports, abstract data, and enter data into an electronic database.
- Follow security standards for working with sensitive data and proper tracking procedures.
- Assist with ongoing development of data abstraction training materials and evaluation of current protocol and processes to improve and streamline current methods.
- Participate in data abstraction trainings to stay up to date with data entry procedures and unique coding scenarios.
- Attend appropriate meetings and provide findings to necessary parties upon request.
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS in sociology, psychology, anthropology, public health, or a related social science field required
- Experience conducting administrative tasks simultaneously and efficiently
- Excellent computer and communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
SALARY
- $55,000
