Title:Quality Systems (QS) Technician

Location:Custom Culinary Oswego, IL

Reports to:  Plant Quality Supervisor

 

Purpose of the Position

Complete daily quality checks and provide process improvement leadership / problem-solving capabilities to the Plant QS and Operations Teams.  Ensure the safety, quality, legality, and authenticity of products, in accordance with regulations and standards for both source and destination locations.

 

 Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes daily quality checks and assists with implementation of quality checks. 
  • Completes analytical and environmental microbiological tests in accordance with regulatory requirements and quality standards to ensure that accurate, verifiable results are obtained.
  • Processes raw material, work-in-process and finished good samples and generates analytical test results for salt, pH, water activity, viscosity, sensory evaluation, etc.
  • Performs daily, monthly, and annual equipment calibration and maintenance activities.
  • Revises procedures, work instructions, and training materials
  • Delivers basic plant training sessions related to FSQS
  • Compares test results to specifications and determines if product tested should be released or placed on hold.
  • Coordinates data entry into database for product specification management and product release.
  • Maintains proper documentation of all QS records.
  • Provides coverage for Pre-Operational Inspection and equipment release.
  • Coordinates proper Microbiological sampling of raw material, in process, and finished product.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of Food Safety (FSP and HACCP) program and Quality requirements.
  • Reviews COA’s and releases incoming raw materials.
  • Other activities defined by the Plant Quality Supervisor / Manager.
  • Can apply logic to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Can determine when to involve other QS resources and / or Plant Management.
  • Make determination of status regarding a finished product or work in process through interpretation of test results, ensuring all at-rish products is under control, properly dispositioned, and risk exposure in minimized.
  • Determine if laboratory equipment is working properly and trouble shoot as necessary
  • Participate in Root Cause Corrective and Preventive Actions process.
  • Can manage spreadsheets and other electronic documents.

Working Relationships:

Internal:

  • Reports to the Plant QS Supervisor.
  • No direct supervisory responsibility.
  • Occasional interactions with Avon and Oswego QS Staff, CC Regulatory Compliance Manager and Medina R&D Staff.
  • Interacts with CC BP or QS, and GLUS Quality Staff.
  • Routinely interacts with hourly plant personnel while performing daily tasks.

External:

  • Interaction with outside testing laboratories, research and development, and occasionally raw material suppliers.
  • Interaction with testing equipment manufacturers
  • Interaction with outside auditors and Regulatory Agencies.

Requirements:

 

Education and/or Experience                                                                     

  • A HS Diploma is required; a 4-year college degree is desirable.
  • Previous FSQS experience is a plus, including previous experience from internal cross-training
  • Previous food manufacturing experience is a plus, especially in a USDA regulated establishment
  • Able to operate computers and interact with software applications, MS Office experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand and walk to communicate and listen effectively.   This will require both office and plant floor environments. 

 

Environmental Concerns

  • Food Manufacturing environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the Quality Systems Lab is usually quiet. The noise level within the plant can be noisy and require that hearing protection be worn. Job can require early morning, late evening, and weekend work responsibilities
