Job Title: Controller - Construction

Job Summary:
The Controller oversees the accounting operations for Gregg Drilling and Pitcher Services. The companies’ services include environmental, geotechnical, and marine site investigation and remediation. Construction/project accounting experience is critically important to the Controller’s success in this role.

This position oversees financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, internal controls, reconciliations, cash receipts, intercompany invoicing, consolidation, banking, tax preparation, and quarterly reporting. The Controller will oversee all accounting staff and work closely with the CFO and Director of Accounting/Corporate Controller, project managers, senior management, and other stakeholders, to ensure accurate and timely financial information and strategic financial insights.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
•    Assist in recruiting, interviews, and trains new staff. 
•    Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
•    Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.  
•    Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy. 

Duties/Responsibilities:
Financial Leadership
•    Partner with colleagues to maintain understanding of business operations, develop and monitor KPIs, analyze results, streamline processes, and improve performance.
Accounting and Financial Reporting
•    Lead the month- and year-end closing and financial reporting process.  
•    Perform consolidation of financial statements for two entities, ensuring accuracy and completeness. 
•    Prepare consolidated financial statements, including eliminations and adjustments, as necessary.
•    Perform and oversee monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts, including bank reconciliations, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
•    Work with accounting team to ensure timely resolution of discrepancies and variances identified during reconciliations. 
•    Review and approve accrual, expense allocation, inter-company, and other miscellaneous journal entries. 
•    Ensure all journal entries are accurately recorded and properly supported by documentation.
•    Review monthly Work-in-Progress report and oversee financial analysis of project costs to identify trends and address issues.
•    Help ensure profitable revenue growth – this may include labor reporting, gross margin analysis, reviewing pricing/job costs, etc. 
•    Provide variance to budget/prior year analysis to corporate on a monthly basis.
Equipment and Asset Management 
•    Oversee the tracking and management of company-owned equipment and assets, ensuring accurate record-keeping and depreciation schedules.
•    Collaborate with operations and project managers to allocate equipment costs to projects, ensuring accurate reporting of equipment utilization and expenses.
•    Manage the capitalization and disposal of fixed assets, ensuring compliance with company policies and accounting standards.
•    Ensure proper recording of equipment maintenance and repair costs, coordinating with the relevant departments to maintain asset performance.
•    Review and approve fixed asset acquisitions, ensuring alignment with company budgets and financial goals.
•    Prepare and post monthly accounting entries related to equipment depreciation, amortization, and asset transfers.
•    Review and reconcile asset and equipment-related general ledger accounts monthly, addressing any discrepancies in a timely manner.
•    Assist with the development and monitoring of KPIs related to equipment utilization, costs, and return on investment.
Budgeting and Forecasting 
•    Develop and coordinate capital and operating budgets.
•    Prepare monthly and annual forecasts.
Banking 
•    Oversee banking activities, including account reconciliations, deposits, and withdrawals.
•    Work with corporate Treasury as needed to establish/close bank accounts, plan significant capital expenditures, obtain credit, and any other non-routine processes.
Compliance and Internal Controls 
•    Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and relevant construction industry regulations. 
•    Develop, document, implement and monitor high level internal controls, policy, and processes in partnership with Woocheen’s Corporate Controller and subsidiary accounting leaders.
•    Support corporate accounting staff during external and internal audits, addressing any identified issues promptly.
•    Maintain detailed and organized records to support audit and review processes.
•    Develop and maintain familiarity with FAR and SBA 8(a) requirements.
Tax Preparation and Reporting 
•    Oversee the preparation of city, state, county, and property taxes, ensuring compliance with all tax regulations and deadlines. 
•    Coordinate with corporate tax team to ensure timely and accurate federal tax filings.
•    Prepare and submit quarterly and annual tax reports, maintaining detailed records for audit and review purposes.
Team Leadership and Development 
•    Hire, train, coach, develop and evaluate team members.
•    Lead and mentor junior accounting staff, providing guidance and support in their professional development. 
•    Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment, encouraging continuous improvement and innovation.
Systems and Process Improvement 
•    Evaluate and propose procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy.  
•    Assist in the implementation of new accounting software and tools as needed, providing training and support to team members. 
•    Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities: 
•    Microsoft Office Suite with advanced knowledge of Excel. 
•    Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail. 
•    Ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities. 
•    Ability to meet stringent deadlines and provide reports on a timely basis. 
•    Ability to work independently. 
•    High ethical standards and integrity, with a commitment to accuracy and compliance.  
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Education and Experience:
•    Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
•    CPA or CMA certification preferred.
•    Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in the construction industry.
•    Proficiency in accounting software, particularly Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate, Vista by Viewpoint, Microsoft Office applications, and financial reporting tools.
•    In-depth understanding of construction accounting principles, job costing, WIP reporting, prevailing wage laws, licensing requirements, tax preparation, and consolidation processes.
•    Experience implementing new ERP software experience is important.
•    Position is subject to satisfactory completion of a background, financial and reference checks.

•    Full-time position with potential for extended hours during peak periods or project deadlines

Work Environment: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions and other elements prevalent at the time.   Normal indoor office environment.
