Job Summary

Sealaska Heritage Store Inventory Specialist/Seasonal Assistant Manager will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a high level of customer service; is responsible for ensuring effective operation of the store including data management in the retail sales platform application, measuring applicable business trends, maximizing sales/profitability, staff mentoring, input on controlling Store stock, expenses and shortages, and all aspects of merchandising and inventory control.  

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain customer service standards in dealing with clients both on-site and remotely. Handling all aspects of communication: on the floor, via calls and emails, etc
  • Keep record of sales, prepare inventory of stock and order merchandise.
  • Update and maintain all aspects of stock data management and processing in the Store’s Retail Platform.
  • Mentor, develop and communicate with all employees.
  • Consistently assist and train Staff in cultural significance of Alaska Native arts merchandise.
  • Maintain awareness of product knowledge and promotions.
  • Plan and assign daily goals, tasks, and assignments. Monitor and follow up through completion.
  • Assist in monitoring sales performance and adjusting strategies.
  • Assist in the creation of promotional campaigns to maximize sales.
  • Maintain all merchandising standards, display presentation, and signage.
  • Maintaining all inventory levels
  • When applicable, assist in orders and buying of art and merchandise.

Direct reports with oversight from management.

Work Environment

This position’s duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines; as well as Store Floor equipment such as: step stools, ladders, moving carts and hand trucks.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen; and work with the management team to clear any questions and confirm their full comprehension of tasks and duties. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently work on all aspects of display merchandising and displays – including installations and furniture assembly. The employee will also be lifting and/or moving packages and objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.

About the Role

This is a full-time position. Store hours vary by season and this position can expect to work extra time during the tourist season; in additional times such as Holidays; and prepping for, and all during, the bi-annual Celebration Event (“even” years, next upcoming Celebration is slated for 2026).
Store employees are expected to work during the SHI Store’s regular business hours, which adapt between 9:30am to 7:30pm seven days a week during the high tourist season (April through October); and between 10:00am to 6:00pm Tuesday to Saturday in the off season - and can expect to work additional hours when completing projects and/ or at special sales occasions.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
  • 2 years of retail or management experience
  • Cultural knowledge (Alaska Native)
