Job Summary

The objective of this Program Manager position is to provide oversight and management including coordination and implementation of the Thru the Cultural Lens: Deeping Connections which is administered through the Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) Education Department. Independent judgement is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workloads and to recommend changes in relation to program practices or procedures. The program will involve a significant amount of coordination, planning, and execution of training and other educational activities for participants, to build on the development and implementation of cultural competency training, creating place-based culturally relevant resources and building on the cohort of culturally knowledgeable educators to improve the academic success and graduation rates for Alaska Native youth.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Operating within the Education Department, this position is responsible for working with SHI leadership, the Publications and Communications Department, Education Director and Assistant Education Director to execute service agreements and other binding documents to support the program.
  • Communicate and manage program goals, objectives, and desired outcomes to the partner organizations, teachers, seminar participants, community members, program staff, and other individuals participating in the project.
  • Act as the Point of Contact for nine school districts, the University of Alaska Southeast, and additional organizations participating in the Culturally Responsive Education Lab: Community of Practice.
  • Oversee and direct
    • Thru the Cultural Lens cultural orientation seminars for educators and for community members.
    • Culturally Proficient Coaching training.
    • Culturally Responsive Curriculum Development: Understanding by Design workshop.
  • Coordinate the collaborative partnerships and agreements to fulfill goals and objectives within the Thru the Cultural Lens projects.
  • Coordinate, lead, and/or participate in Thru the Cultural Lens program related meetings.
  • Assist and monitor the performance of the project partners and service providers.
  • Participate in monthly review of the Thru the Cultural Lens program budgets, and financial reporting with the Principal Investigator, Chief Operating Officer and Education Director.
  • Prepare all program reports needed for SHI, agencies and other partners.
  • Coordinate project evaluations and reporting, including tracking activities.
  • Gathering and maintaining data for performance measures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated high level of verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and activities with attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills in project management and program coordination.
  • Experience managing federal grants, grant reporting, and project evaluation.
  • Technical capacity and expertise in using charts, tables, graphs, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Knowledge of Southeast Alaska Native culture and Southeast Alaska’s communities.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will have 2 to 3 direct reports.

Work Environment

This position’s duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.

About this Role

This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration. 
Some travel to project partner communities can be expected.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in education or project-related field
  • 3 years of professional work in project management and program coordination
